Shoulder Slings
These often have to be worn for a considerable time after shoulder surgery to rest the joint and muscles about the joint while healing occurs.
The common triangular sling which goes around the neck tends to pull on the neck, aggrevating any arthritis or difficulty with the neck joints, muscles or ligaments. It also rests or puts pressure on the painful shoulder.
We prefer to supply our patients with a customised sling, which avoids these problems.
                                                Â
Please note:
- the forearm is parallel to the floor.
- the hand is supported by the sling, not hanging over the edge.
- the "U" strap rests on the uninjured shoulder.
- the front strap is vertical from sling to "U" strap.
the rear strap rests over the shoulder blade of the injured side, not the shoulder!
The sling is worn for 3 weeks after:
- shoulder instability surgery
- acromio-clavicular excision
- "reverse" shoulder replacements
The sling is worn for 6 weeks after:
- rotator cuff repairs
- "anatomical" shoulder replacements
No sling is worn after:
impingement surgery (decompression)
