Definition of "Arthroscopy"                           

The arthroscope is a small telescope which is connected to a camera, transmitting images from within the body to a T.V. monitor. Light is passed down fibreoptic filaments around the outside of the lens system to provide the illumination within the body space being examined. Water or other fluids are used to distend the space to allow for focusing and increasing clarity and visibility - this also is passed down the cannula around the fibreoptics and lens system. The whole diameter of this complex instrument may be as small as 2 millimeters for toe and finger joints, 2.7mm for wrist and ankle joints and 4.5mm for shoulder knee and elbow joints.

A second portal or stab wound is used for additional instruments to manipulate or alter tissues within the joint thus allowing us to treat many conditions without large incisions and therefore less pain and quicker recovery.
